Reinstalling windows

I want to reinstall Windows XP with the format option. I
have all my documents and important stuff saved on a
second hard drive inside my computer. Will I be able to
save and retrieve them from my second hard drive after
reinstalling windows XP?

Sure, as long as 1) you didn't encrypt them without backing up your
encryption key; 2) you don't make a mistake and format the wrong drive.
Of course, you'll need to install whatever programs are necessary to
open your data files such as word processors, etc.
