I have a PC with a preinstalled Windows XP home version
installed. Due to problems with virus, do i need to
reinstall the O/S (i have the original installation CD),
but i have lost the registration key.

When trying to reinstall XP, i am prompted for the
registration key, but since i dont have it can i not
complete the installation.
Is there a way to find what registration key was used at
the original installation?

- If your old version of WinXP still works then you
can try the software from this link:
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

- If you have proof of purchase then you can try here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326246

- If neither of these work for you then you may have to buy a
new licence, and follow the advice printed under the Product
Key Sticker: "Don't lose this product key. You must use it
every time you install this software. So be sure to store this
folder in a safe place."

I have a spreadsheet with the licence number for every piece
of software I ever bought. It is backed up to a disk stored
away from my PC.

Most new PC's come with the registration key on a holigram
sticker located somewhere on the PC, see if you have one
of those.
