reinstalling windows xp

I bought my Windows XP Professional a few years ago, and
recently my computer crashed. I am having to reinstall
Windows XP, but for some reason the key I was given when
I bought the program is not working now. I have the
Certificate of Authenticity and bought the Windows XP
program with my computer when it was new. The vendor
gave me the original discs and certificates. Why would
my key no longer work and how do I resolve this issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
