I have a computer that was affected by some system viruses. Reinstalling
Windows XP home using the upgrade CD did not overwrite the infected files as
a post on another newsgroup stated it might.

I am at the point that I would love to just reformat the hard drive and
reinstall windows for a fresh install. The problem I foresee is that the
upgrade CD requires a previous version of Windows on the PC or a qualifying
CD. The PC originally came from the manufacturer with Windows already
installed and no CD.

Is there a way to work through this issue?

Minimum upgrade path for windows XP home is Windows 98. You will need to
obtain one of these disk from ebay or elsewhere as stated.

Note :: You shouldnt have had received a new pc with a retail Upgrade
version installed - without receivng the orignal Genuine OS disk that was
used for the upgrade! Contact your supplier and ask them for the original
disk.
