I was having Windows XP Home (Pyrated version installed on my system).
Now I have purchased XP Professional and upgraded my OS from within OS only.
After complete upgradation, activation, and registration I found that
Windows is misbehaving somewhat. When I login as adminstrator, it does not
give me any permission to change any setup. Automatic Update is grayed. Could
not install IE7 Beta 3, Windows defender. So I am thinking to reformat the
system.
After reformatting, will microsoft allow me to activate my copy of OS again
? or I have to take some backup / precaution steps before formating the
system.

Yes.

Microsoft has become aware that occasionally, people need to reinstall
Windows.

In the event that re-activation over the internet isn't possible, you will
be presented with a toll-free telephone number to call. On the occasions I
have had to call, it was under five minutes.

If you purchased an 'upgrade' version install CD, rather than the full
retail install version. you will need to have on hand your qualifying
previous-version CD.

Thanks Patrick !

On your suggestion I have formatted my system and to be happy, OS is
instaenly activated over the Internet.

Thanks once again.
