You can insert the disk, after you are booted into Windows, and find out
what your options are. (Don't boot using the DVD). If it's basically a
Vista installation disk with your OEM's branding, you should have the option
to Upgrade, which will keep your programs, settings, documents, etc. After
you get done accepting the EULA, your options should appear on the next
screen. Upgrade or Custom should hopefully be available (the Custom choice
won't keep your settings, and is rather, a clean install. It will save all
the files on your computer, however, to a folder called Windows.old, but
programs won't work, and user accounts and settings will be lost). At this
point you can X out the window to end Setup, and no changes will have been
made. But at least you'll know your options.

In my case, my Vista continues to freeze after running through the startup
repair option, so I cannot access the DVD from the OS nor do anything else
from the OS except power it off. Is there any other repair option or is the
only recourse a complete reinstall of XP then Vista?
