Previously posted re: restore utility that doesn't work -
ie, restore points are there, but utility doesn't do
anything. A suggestion was made to turn off restore,
then reboot, then turn on restore and reboot. This
didn't solve the problem. Another suggestion was to
reinstall restore utility if the above failed -- with
precise instructions. I can't find that post here
anymore; can someone please re-post instructions for
reinstall of restore. Am running XP SP2.

Thanks!

Make sure you have enabled the ability to view all hidden files and
extensions (from the Control Panel Folder Options applet). Then go to
your Windows folder and from there, to the inf folder. Open the inf
folder and find sr.inf. Right-click on sr.inf and choose "Install".

Follow the prompts and reboot.

In System - System restore, disable it and reboot. It is then a good
idea to clear out the System Volume Information folders, on a NTFS drive
this will involve 'Taking ownership' of them first, making sure you
leave System as having Full control access (Search for "Take Ownership"
in Help and support )

The look in the hidden Windows\Inf folder for sr.inf, right click it,
take Install

Enable SR again, and I would highlight drives, take Settings and adjust.
There is no point having it on on data drives, and on System or Program
partitions I would cut the space allowed down to under 1GB if more is
set - the default of 12% of the drive seems too much for its own good on
modern large ones
