Reinstalled machine (and Outlook). Recover Outlook.pst?

I downloaded the outlook.pst file from the machine before
I redid it and now want to recover the old outlook.pst
file. How do I do that? I get a message that the services
are not proper (or some such) and then it won't use the
old file. One thing that I did was setup the accounts
before I tried to open the existing file...

I even tried Eudora to see if it would import the
outlook.pst file and I get no error messages, but it
doesn't import the file...

I also tried to rename the older outlook file and see if
Outlook would open it, but no, it won't...

Is there any way to either import the file, or dump the
file so that the email can be recovered somehow (like
through Word or something)?
