Recently, the taskbar on my WinXP Pro desktop tends to hang all the times,
and i can't install any new program too.

I have no other choice but to reinstall windows. I try to reinstall but
everytimes after a numbers of files were loaded, it showed that the hard disk
can't be detected (it's a SATA one, and I can still use programs and retrieve
any files from the disk under windows environment, so i suppose there is no
problem with the harddisk).

Then i tried to reformat drive C, where my windows OS resided. It said i
can't format the disk too.

What's going on ? How can i reinstall Windows ? or in the worst case, how
can i format drive C (preferable Drive D, my data disk, can be kept) and
reinstall WinXP Pro ?

Thanks.

try a "repair" install first ...during the regular install process you are
asked if you wish to repair the existing OS ..do that and see if it helps ..

thanks Haggis,

But i tried 'repair' already. But the PC simply told me that it cannot
detect the hard disk and can't continue the process any more.

You may be required to install the drivers for your SATA hard drive during
the Windows install process.
During the install process you load/install additional drivers by pressing
the F6 key.
Look on your motherboard manufacturer's web site for the required drivers.

Hi,

I've got quite the same problem... But i'm doing the repair thing... and it
happen that arriving at 34mins left... when the screen flicker a little, it
stops processing... without freezing...! I left it for more than an hour...
and nothing...! Now it keeps reinstalling and doing the same thing... I dont
want to install a fresh one, because i have to recuparate all my data...!

To summarize: My pc was freezing and a blue screen was appearing and
restarting again and again....! That's why i'm doing a repair session... If
it is not working... does that mean my hard drive (Hitachi desktar 160gb Sata
II) is corrupt?

cheers

Next time please make a new post for your problem instead of
interjecting it into someone else's thread. For your issue, please see:
