I have a customer that is upgrading his motherboard, hard
drive, cpu, and memory.

He bought the Windows XP Home Edition upgrade and
installed it on his old 10GB hard drive.

He now wants to upgrade all of this stuff and get a fresh
install of XP Home on a new 80GB hard drive.

Will I have any problems activating XP Home with this many
changes going on?

My guess is that you won't be able to reinstal because
it's a "different computer," but you can't loose anything
by trying. If it works, you'll save $100.

He will need qualifying XP media to clean install using the upgrade XP CD.
Since this will include a mother board change, OEM versions will not qualify
and will likely be denied activation.

If it is more than 120 days since it was activated before, then a fresh
setup will activate on the net in just the same way, in seconds. If
less, then that much change is likely to be seen as constituting a new
machine. See www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm. There will then be a
reaction that it has been installed too many times, and he will need to
do it by calling the toll free number given at
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows
when you take the 'activate by phone' alternative,. to explain briefly
and read out and check a 50 digit number, getting a 42 digit one in
exchange to type in. May take 5 minutes or so.
