reinstall XP due to virus infection

No antivirus installed, infected, cannot run any .exe
applications. To reinstall XP, must I run fixmbr from
recovery console before format and reinstall XP?
Currently XP will boot up, I just cannot run my aps.

if you are going to reinstall, backup your data, boot with the cd, remove
the partition, create the partition, format the drive and install...but look
at the other post and get the free anti-virus...
