To install XP on a second computer you must buy a second retail copy of the
program.

As far as Norton, you'll have to read the EULA or license but I doubt if you
can install it on a second computer.

The rule is quite clear. It's one copy (or one license) for each computer.

There's nothing new here. This is exactly the same rule that's been in
effect on every version of Windows starting with Windows 3.1. The only thing
new with XP is that there's now an enforcement mechanism.

The rule is essentially the same for almost all commercial software. If you
want to install it on two computers, you are required to buy two copies.

The rule might be clear, but the situation is not.

REinstall means that XP is already on the machine.
If that's the case, there are utilities to recover the license key.
Then one can use that key to REinstall XP legally. Yes?

Now, if the OP didn't say what he meant, then the situation is unknown.
If I thought I understood what the OP didn't say, I might be tempted to
knee-jerk all the way to the piracy conclusion...but I don't...
Probabilities are helpful in the aggregate, but useless in an individual
case.

Get magic jellybean and run it on the second pc. That will give you the
product key which will allow you to use any XP CD of the same type to
reinstall XP.

By XP CD of the same type I mean if the second PC has XP home retail then
use an XP home retail CD with your product key, if XP Pro retail use a XP
Pro retail CD. If OEM then try generic OEM. It might be a bit different if
using a OEM from one of the larger PC makers as they can tailor the version
of XP to a particular computer. You might find generic OEM still installs
and works you would have to try.

Once you have the product id you could even download a version of XP from
the net if you felt brave enough and understood the risks of infection. As
long as you have a legal product id there is nothing illegal about using a
copy from online.

It's not entirely clear, but rereading his message I think I misread it and
you're right. Sorry

If the CD he's trying to reinstall with is of the same type (Professional
vs. Home; Retail vs. OEM; Full vs. Upgrade), yes. Otherwise it won't work

A key will only supply 1PC, you must buy a new one via Microsoft.com or your
nearest computer store.
