If I reinstall (repair) XP Pro SP2 on my machine, will the underlying
..NET Framework be overwritten and only .NET 2.0 be present after I am
completed? I currently have .NET Framework 1.0 and 1.1 installed.

Thanks,

Reinstall isnt the same as repair.Reinstall is simply that, reinstalling
from the
ground up,+ with a reinstall one would/should format 1st.Repair if one would
ask is a complete waste of time, between a fresh install and a repair, the time
is really only in formating the hd,if youd run like the FTW before you
reinstall.
Also,if youre repair doesnt work, youre back to reinstalling xp + the time you
wasted...

Andrew E. is our resident troll. At best his advice is merely wrong;
usually it is actively destructive. So ignore him.

It is always useful to try the Repair Install first. It takes far less
time than clean-installing the operating system, then installing all
your drivers, printers, programs, etc. I don't believe .Net 1.0 will be
affected although I don't know about the update to it. Normally you
need to reinstall Windows Updates after a Repair Install. .Net 1.0/1.1
is a separate program from .Net 2.0. In any case, it is easily
downloaded from MS again.

Interesting reply as Microsoft uses the two terms synonymously:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

I have reinstalled/repaired XP in the past with success. I do not
have several days (vs. hours) to reinstall all my programs, adjust
settings, etc., etc. required for a reformat/clean install. Of
course, if things go awry, your final sentence could prove prophetic.
I will take my chances.

I guess you don't have an answer to my question?

Thanks for the heads up. I replied to his message prior to reading
yours.

I've set aside some time this weekend for this event. :-)

On a related note, I'm guessing I should uninstall IE7 before
proceeding? Something tells me there might be an issue as it is not
present on my XP Pro SP2 CD and IE is so interwoven into the OS...

Any other programs one should uninstall beforehand? I completed a
reinstall/repair about ten months ago and don't recall uninstalling
anything then.

Yes, if you can uninstall IE7 first that would be best. According to MS,
the bug that caused problems with not uninstalling IE7 before doing a
Repair Install has been fixed but they suggest that if you can do the
uninstall, you do it. I don't usually uninstall anything else when I do
a Repair Install, but as a precaution if you have Zone Alarm I probably
would uninstall it since it can cause problems generally. Also if you
have GoBack installed, you will need to disable or uninstall it first.
Other than that, go for it BUT make sure you have all your data backed
up onto removable media like DVD/CD's first because Stuff Happens.

If the Repair Install doesn't work, then you can bite the bullet and do
the Clean Install. Here are links to instructions for both types of
installs:
