Reinstall Help Please

Windows won't start, I dont wanna reinstall but only
because i dont wanna lose files im working on and i have
saved for a long time. i tried system restore from
command propmt but i cant even get to a command prompt in
safe mode. i dont mind reinstalling (that seems like my
only option)but i need to backup the files on my
harddrive is this possible?

If you can provide any errors everyone here can provide you with more
support. You can try a repair install of Windows XP which will not damage
your personal files.
