I've eliminated every trace I can find of RealPlayer in an
attempt to get mp3 files to stop being renamed to mpga at
download time. I'm sick and tired of having to correct the
file extension on every mp3 file I go to download. The
only occurance of mpga I find in the registry in under
REALPLAYER. Yes, even after I uninstalled realplayer.
Norton Utility WinDoctor doesn't find anything wrong with
the fact that realplayer is in the registry but
nonexistant on my computer. I don't get it. What am I
missing here? What happens if I simply delete realplayer
out of my registry? Would that be bad news?

Hi Kelly,
Thanks for your help. I went through the registry and
changed all the mpga file extensions to mp3 but that
didn't help. I still come up with a default file extension
of mpga for any mp3 file that I right-click 'save target
as'. My registry looks like a mess. The are thousands of
entries for programs that I haven't had for many months.
RegClean4.1 doesn't check for that kind of thing I guess
and apparently neither does Norton WinDoctor. I've heard
that sometimes CleanSweep makes a mess of things. What is
your opinion? Do you know of any registry cleaners that
does a good job? Thanks again.

Hi Bob,

Have you tried to troubleshoot the issue? Either way, to remove the
remnants via the registry, follow these steps:

Hi Bob,

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp3\OpenWithList. Verify that your wanted program is
listed there.

In the meantime, merge the regedit sent via email.

Also, while still in _Root, if .mpga is listed, right click rename: mpgaold
and then try another download.

As for your old software being listed in the registry, follow the steps I
provided earlier and right click, delete them.

For anyone who's interested, the final answer (fix) to
this problem was provided by a freeware utility by the
name of RegCleaner (not RegClean).
