Can anyone briefly and simply explain what the Registry
does? I often read something about it which seemed to
indicate it is an important feature of OS. I'm an average
PC operator and would like to learn a bit more complex
features of the PC. Thanks.

It's basically the catalog of everything that's installed on your PC.

For example, its tells windows what video driver to use. It tells
windows where your programs are located on your hard drive and what
settings you've done to customize your apps. Think of it as the card
catalog in your local library.
