Registry related errors

I am running XP SP2 and have 2 registry-related (but perhaps unrelated)
sofware problems: (1) I cannot get my Kodak EasyShare V6 to install and (2) I
cannot upgrade to the latest verson of CA Personal Firewall. Kodak worked
before I got XP, but not since; last version of firewall worked fine and all
other components of CA Internet Security Suite installed and are running
fine. So, for Kodak I get "Setup was unable to modify the registry", "Unable
to finish task" and "(Error code 51x28x0x)"; for firewall I get most of the
way through the install and then the error is "Setting product registry ID
failed!" when registering SDK services: "Error E9027: Unable to install CA
Personal Firewall. Component Result:0". I have consulted both software IT
groups and they are unable to fix. I have read several postings regarding
registry corruption but I do not understand how to diagnose or fix them
safely. Can anyone please take the time to walk me through this in lay
terms? I do not speak Microsoft. Thank you.

I got the same exact error today installing CA Personal Firewall. The
problem is with permissions in the registry.
I think this would fix it (Be VERY careful modifying your registry, as
you can do some major, unfixable damage to your OS in there):
Go to Start->Run...
Type in: regedit <enter>
Find: Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\ComputerAssociates
Right-click on that node and select "Permissions..."
highlight your ID in the top box, and select "Allow" next to "Full
Control" and "Read" in the bottom box.
Click "OK"
Close The Rgeistry Editor.
Try to install again.

I may have had similar problems with the Kodak s/w, but I don't
remember for sure. Try the same thing for Kodak, following the
directions above and replacing "ComputerAssociates" with "Kodak".

So far, this has allowed me to uninstall the apps properly. I am now
about to reinstall and I will see if it all works...

That worked for the Kodak software [Yeah!] but still the same error for the
Firewall. Any luck when you made the registry change?

No. Still failing here, too. I still think it is a registry access
error, but I have no idea where else they might be putting stuff in
there.
I tried uninstalling everything (even restoring to a system restore
point from a few days ago) and then just installing the Firewall by
itself, and still no dice.
I have opened a ticket with CA support on this. I'm giving up trying to
fix it myself and hoping they respond early in the week. Otherwise,
I'll be asking for a refund.

I have had a ticket with CA open for several weeks and all of their fixes
didn't work. Please let me know your outcome if/when you get it resolved.
Their Security Suite is excellent; I have been using it for years. Best of
luck!

I spent an hour on the chat line with CA support yesterday. The only
additional thing they had me try was to grant myself explicite
permissions on the HKLM/Software/Classes branch. It did not help at
all.

What seems to happen is the application creates a new branch in the
registry under HKLM/Software/ComputerAssociates and then it neglects to
grant permissions to that branch to the current user. Then the
firewall software install tries to modity the branch (with the
credentials of the current user, of course), and it doesn't have
permission to do so.
I am wondering if this due to some Policy setting at the OS level. The
fact that they don't know how to solve it quickly means it must be
fairly rare. I have had some Employer-provided security software
installed on my machine, so I could have some remaining tighter
security policies than default. Maybe I'll try to install it on another
machine that hasn't had that stuff on it to see what happens.
I am still looking into this.
In any case, I am very dissappointed in this software to date. Even if
it is due to something rare, professional developers should account for
non-default settings on the target machine.

I'll post again if I ever figure this out.
