registry problems

I use windows XP.
While using my computer, the screen went blank and my system rebooted.

During reboot a screen appeared that allows me to choose the type bootup I
desired. I selectect to reboot from the last known working configuration.
My machine booted up but it used an old registry. Now nothing works
properly. Most of my desktop Icons are no longer available. I dont have
access to most of my applications. All of my settings are gone and I cant
even use help or system restore. Now when I try to access windows help I get
the following error: "Windows cannot find 'helpctr.exe'. Make sure you typed
the name correctly, and then try again".

Also, when I select the "start" and then try to select "programs" nothing
happens. None of my applications are available.

Is there some way that I can restore my old registry settings and get my old
desktop back?

Please Help.

You can try to Restore the system to a state from before this recent
incident. It might work. Start > All Programs > Accessories > System
Tools > System Restore.

Hi WorkingHard,
What you have been doing when the Screen gone blank, how do you know that
you got the old registry?, did you install new software or hardware
recently, please write back with all what happen when before you got the blank
screen.
Can you restore to previous date and get your settings back, but do that
after scanning if you get infected with Viruses and Malware from these links;

http://www.ik-cs.com/got-a-virus.htm
http://vil.nai.com
and Malware;

your CD if you plan to use it)
Hope this helps
please write back here

I cannot access restore to an earlier date in time. When I try to select
"help" in the Start menu I get the error: "Cannot find 'helpctr.exe'.
Also cannot use Start > All Programs because when I select all programs,
nothing pops up. None of the applications are available under 'All Programs'.

Is there a backup copy of the older registries that I can somehow restore.

You can try the methods described in the KB Article below, but it may
not work, as that is affectively what you did by selecting "Last Known
Good Configuration:"

Use Start - Run and enter the following string into the dialog box:

c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

That should bring up the System Restore utility. Choose the most
recent restore point that is prior to the onset of your problem.

Good luck
