About every other startup, startup takes much longer and
I get a message that "One of the files containing the
system's registry had to be recovered by use of a log or
alternate copy. The recovery was successful." Is there
a problem I can correct to prevent this?

Run SFC (system file checker) this may require your XP CD.
Start>Run>(type) cmd>(type) sfc /scannow (notice the space between c & / )
