hello guys, I made a backup copy of my registry, I don't know what's
going on but when I double click on my backup registry or any registry
patches I have they all open in notebook instead of applying itself to
the registry.

I'm running xp w/ SP2

Here's something to try: Right click on the file and form the context menu
choose merge if an option. If its not an option then in the right click menu
select properties, then in the following dialog by opens with click on change
and set to C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe

Edit is listed as the default action. Right click *.reg file and select
Merge.

If you right click a .reg file, the commands are probably in this order:
Edit
Merge
Print

With Edit being in BOLD text.

The default action can be changed to Merge, but Edit is safer. That way you
do not Merge accidentally.

To backup the *entire* registry, use ERUNT. Backing up to a .REG file is recommended only if you're exporting a particular branch, and not the entire registry.

These links would help.
