I used a registry cleaner with my Win98 OS. I was told I
didn't need one with WinXP. I'm looking at a program
called Registry Mechanic. I don't want to buy it if it
would simply be a redundant program XP already provides.
Any advice from the field?

Registry cleaners are of negligible value. They won't improve your
computer's performance - despite all their hype - and these newsgroups are
filled with posts from users who did serious harm to their systems,
sometimes irreparable, by using these toys. Learn how to use your computer
properly and you'll be way ahead of the game.

Hi, Di.

WinXP looks a lot like Win98 on the surface, but there are MANY differences
underneath. When we upgrade to WinXP, we need to shake off the Win98
mindset.

I've been using WinXP for over 3 years now and have never needed a Registry
Cleaner of any kind. Most of the people who report having used them are
asking for advice on how to clean up the mess the cleaner left. :>(

Save your money. ;<)

Good advice from RC. Don't mess with the XP registry unless there's a
specific reason to do so and you're sure you know what you're doing, in
which case you can use Regedit.
