I downloaded Registry smart vers 2.6 and it says I have over 200 errors -
any one use this and is it worth buying to fix my errors?

or is there a free way to do this?

thanks - Pam

If you are not sufficiently knowledgeable about the Windows registry
so as to be able to assess the validity of these purported errors then
you need to leave it alone.

Messing with the registry can leave you with a totally unusable
system, and recovery can be difficult.

Many of these purported registry fixers are designed to produce "false
positives" and/or to greatly exaggerate the potential impact of any
discrepancies they do find so as to goad you into purchasing their
product.

If your computer actually had 200 significant errors in the registry
you would be getting bombarded with error messages from Windows and/or
from application programs. If your computer was usable at all, that
is.

The fact that your computer is running, and is not producing any error
messages that are, or might be, registry related, is proof enough that
you do not have a problem.

And "if it ain't broke don't fix it" is doubly applicable to the
registry.

Good luck

Those aren't really problems, they're part of the software
manufacturer's scam, trying to get you to buy software that you don't
need, and that can't do your system any good.

What specific *problems* are you actually experiencing (not some
program's bogus listing of imaginary problems) that you think can be
fixed by using a registry cleaner? If you do have a problem that is
rooted in the registry, it would be far better to simply edit (after
backing up, of course) only the specific key(s) and/or value(s) that are
causing the problem. Why use a shotgun when a scalpel will do the job?
Additionally, the manually changing of one or two registry entries is
far less likely to have the dire consequences of allowing an automated
product to make multiple changes simultaneously.

The registry contains all of the operating system's "knowledge" of
the computer's hardware devices, installed software, the location of the
device drivers, and the computer's configuration. A misstep in the
registry can have severe consequences. One should not even turning
loose a poorly understood automated "cleaner," unless he is fully
confident that he knows *exactly* what is going to happen as a result of
each and every change. Having seen the results of inexperienced people
using automated registry "cleaners," I can only advise all but the most
experienced computer technicians (and/or hobbyists) to avoid them all.
Experience has shown me that such tools simply are not safe in the hands
of the inexperienced user.

The only thing needed to safely clean your registry is knowledge
and Regedit.exe. If you lack the knowledge and experience to maintain
your registry by yourself, then you also lack the knowledge and
experience to safely configure and use any automated registry cleaner,
no matter how safe they claim to be.

Further, no one has ever demonstrated, to my satisfaction, that the
use of an automated registry cleaner, particularly by an untrained,
inexperienced computer user, does any real good. There's certainly been
no empirical evidence offered to demonstrate that the use of such
products to "clean" WinXP's registry improves a computer's performance
or stability.

I always use Regedit.exe. I trust my own experience and judgment
far more than I would any automated registry cleaner. I strongly
encourage others to acquire the knowledge, as well.

No...plenty of freeware apps to do this.
or is there a free way to do this?
There are many that do but unless there's something not working on your
PC, I'd leave it alone.

Pam - the debate whether such utilities as a Registry cleaner, Defrag, etc
goes on. However check out the freebie, recommended by "Smart Computing".

thank you all for the input - I really appreciate it - I guess I was getting
desperate - I hate to have my machine in the shop for any length of time -
and my programs are running sooo slow - I've done everything I can think of
to clean stuff up - but it takes my browsers (both ff and ie) about 15-20
secs to pull up a page, my programs take too long to pull up - and I'm on
dsl - it's just started happening in the last month - I think it started
when fp2003 quit allowing me to access 'localhost' to publish/open
webs.....still can't get that d*** thing fixed....no matter how much I
uninstall reinstall....ect ect....

guess I'm just desperate .... but nice to know I don't need to buy anything
right now - I do NOT want to go into the registry. .... :-)

thanks

One question:

Do you have any Norton or Symantec Antivirus/Systemworks or McAfee
products installed on your computer?

No - gave up on them about a year ago - would never use Norton if they paid
me :-)

do have ZA and AVG - but also took them off rebooted and tried to run
programs/browsers...still long to load -

if you think of anything else - let me know - I'd love to get my 'localhost'
back....sigh
