Registry Failure - Temp Profile - Help :)

Guest

Dear all..

I have a system that gave the following warning upon startup after a power outage..
"windows can't load profile as it may be corrupted" ..

then a window warning..
"... is logging on with a temporary profile" (please excuse my para-phrasing

1 - When this restart completed the user didn't realise that the profile would not be saved
2 - They found their documents that had been automatically backed up from the desktop to a newly generated temp directory "alpha1bak"
3 - The user Dragged these files & Dropped them back on the desktop
4 - Rebooting after this resulted in the documents dissapearing from the desktop again and not finding their way to a "bak" directory

The Question is ... how do we recover these files now???

Any help would be greatly apprecieated... Thank you all :

If you immediately stopped all activity on the drive, then you might have a
chance with Emergency Undelete from

I'd give it a go but there isn't any trialware avaliable for that program :
Symantec Norton Systemworks 2003 was installed on the system & I tried the Norton Undelete / Deleted file revovery program but it didn't see any of the files. Do you think this software would work when Nortons didn't

I suspect that they (the files) have not been "tagged" as deleted but are sitting "on the desktop" somehow / somewhere. (That may be a very poor description.. my apologies :)

I was planning on..
1. Booting to Win 2000 CD
2. running the Recovery Consol
3. running Fixboot & Fix MBR to attempt to repair the proble

... an obvious method I guess but I wanted to consult this fine group of specialists for advice first :

Any other ideas out there gang

Thanks :)

* No reason to think so.

* They should still be there unless the drive space has been overwritten
which is why it is important to not use the pc.

| I was planning on...
| 1. Booting to Win 2000 CD
| 2. running the Recovery Console
| 3. running Fixboot & Fix MBR to attempt to repair the problem
* Neither of these has anything to do with this issue.

Thanks for getting back to me again. :

If Nortons undelete doesn't pick up the files as deleted & you agree that the files are still there somewhere, what would you recommend the I do from here

I've made sure that the system isn't used until a repair plan is determined
I'm just a bit stumped as to how to locate & recover the missing files that were on the temporary profile desktop

Any ideas?

Well I didn't necessarily say that. In fact I have no way of knowing. I just
made the statement.

"They should still be there unless the drive space has been overwritten"
