registry errors

I'm having errors with my registry keys.

1. I go to start, run, and type in regedit.
2. In HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, I can't open .3g2. I get an error that says Cannot
open .3g2: Error while opening key. In HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT there is WELL OVER
50 keys that have the same error in just HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. The key errors
are only happening in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.
3. I think that my registry key errors are also preventing me from
downloading and installing common programs such as Adobe Flash Player, Adobe
Reader,Adobe Photoshop, my calculator and Microsoft Paint are missing, as
well as my Microsoft Board Computer games that are automatically there in
games (Backgammon,Checkers, etc..) and on one computer setting the desktop
screen is white and can't be changed. Of course, I'm just assuming and I
could be wrong.
4. What can I do to solve my registry key errors situation? Re-installation
of Windows XP is just not an option right now. Also, a system restore seems
to be out of the question, unless you can tell me how to get a date further
back, since I don't have any restore options.
If more information is needed, I will be more than gladly provide it.

Thanks

yes, I'm aware that I have a lot of Registry issues. However, I stated that
as of right now, reinstalling XP is not an option. That is why, I'm looking
for other ways to solve my problem. If there is no way to fix my situation,
then I want to be told that, instead of being told repeatedly to reinstall XP
when I've said that I can't right now.

Why not consider a "Repair" install ? Manual Registry changes are
tedious, time consuming and prone to errors. As I've followed this
thread I've wondered why you've spent so much time trying to fix
these issues manually. Whatever you eventually do, I hope you have
some type of imaging capability and have made a verified image of
the current PC state. Sometimes the more you work on a PC the
worse it becomes. There is a point where further effort to repair it
can't be justified and you just backup personal data and start over.

To do a repair install what will I have to do, does it involve re-installing
XP?

I feel like I haven't received enough help to actually attempt to fix the
registry. I've never went into the registry and deleted keys or anything, but
I have tried registry cleaners and it hasn't helped me. My ideas are
obviously not the right way to go about this, so I am trying to find a way to
go about this correctly without re-installaton. I haven't been given really
any suggestions at all besides reinstallation, which is of no use to me. I
don't want to give up fixing the registry, without ever trying properly to
fix it. I want to be able to try at least 1 or 2 things to see if they will
work, before giving up on it. And I haven't been told anything that I can try.

It does re-install XP but preserves all you 3rd-Party applications
and your settings and personal data. You'd loose approximately
60+ Windows Updates which would have to be re-applied. The
repair installation simply resets XP back to it's installed state. If
your XP CD-ROM is a Gold or Service Pack 1 level you'll need
to reapply Service Pack 2 before using Microsoft Update. I've
forgotten what your original issues are - but I would import all
the Registry Cleaner backups and that alone might help repair a
few of the issues. I'd still be inclined to do some kind of Image on
the PC just as a fall back protection. Can't really think of other
suggestions or ideas.

Unfortunately there are very few *practical* ways to fix this. I would
suggest that you start whatever you do by removing the drive from the
system, hosting it in another, and backing up and verifying your data.

An easy and quick tool for this is the Acronis TrueImage 15-day trial
version. Yes, you'll need sufficient space to store the image file, but
you can reduce its size somewhat by deleting the pagefile.sys and
hiberfil.sys files before imaging, and as well removing all content.ie5
folders on that drive. Then empty the recycle bin. After imaging, mount
the image as read-only and browse through it to verify that you can see and
open your data files. And if your efforts don't quite work, you can
restore the image and try again.

If you do manual copies, be sure you locate your email and address files.
These are often not stored in the My Documents structures, but in hidden or
system folders. You don't need to be concerned about this if you image.

Once your data is secure, you can try whatever you can think of.

For example, you might try saving out the registry you have now to a spare
folder, then overwriting it with the default registry as you would from this
page:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

You can do this while the drive is hosted in the other system. This will
cause your system to "forget" about all the apps and updates you have
installed. Normally the next step would be to run System Restore, but you
apparently can't do that, so you would need to rerun installs - but you
would at least have a working registry. Check that the default files are
in place before you try this.

However, my preference would be to respect the value of my time, and after
backing up via the image, wipe the drive and do a clean install.

You should try to figure out how to make a reinstall an option.

No. You get out your XP CD, put it in the drive, and when the screen comes
up, you select R for repair. The programs on the CD will attempt to repair
your existing installation.

Nothing should change - One word of caution. You boot the XP CD
There is two separate/different type of Repair operations. One is the
Repair using Recovery Console. You do not want this. You continue
the setup it should examine your drive and locate your existing XP. It
will ask you if you want to Repair this installation. - This is what you
want. If you do not see this step offered, DO NOT CONTINUE. If
you do it can possibly OVERWRITE the existing XP. If that happens
you'll loose applications and personal data.

Please take time to visit the following website and review the advice

from
downloading and installing common programs such as Adobe Flash
Player, Adobe Reader,Adobe Photoshop, my calculator and Microsoft
Paint are missing, as well as my Microsoft Board Computer games
that
are automatically there in games (Backgammon,Checkers, etc..) and
on
one computer setting the desktop screen is white and can't be
changed. Of course, I'm just assuming and I could be wrong.
4. What can I do to solve my registry key errors situation?
Re-installation of Windows XP is just not an option right now.
Also,
a system restore seems to be out of the question, unless you can
tell
me how to get a date further back, since I don't have any restore
options.
If more information is needed, I will be more than gladly provide
it.

Thanks
