Missing Registry Keys

D

dfrog

I have Googled, but not found (probably my fault) how to restore missing
registry keys.

I have just used 'Codec Tweak tool' in K-Lite Codec Pack to help solve a
problem and it reports some missing Registry Keys.

Somewhere along the way K-Lite install reported (amongst similar others)
'DirectShow filter was detected as broken'

Name Subtitle Mixer
Filename Unknown
CLSID {00A95963-3BE5-48C0-3356D67EA09D}
Reg key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{083863F1-70DE-11D0-BD40-00A0C911CE86}\instance\{00A95963-3BE5-48C0-AD9F-3356D67AE09D}
Reason Missing required registry key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00A95963-3BE5-48C0-AD9F-3356D67AE09D}

Remove this item from registry?
(Yes = recommended)

YES NO

Now just to be on the safe side I didn't do a YES here !!

(I have already backed up registry 'and' exported it to a memory stick)

Can someone tell me please, where I can get such a missing registry key and
put it back in it's rightful place, or show me where to find the help I
need?

Thanks

did you go back to a system restore point, before you had the problem. and
then reinstall the app?

There is no "undelete" function for registry keys. Use System Restore
or re-install the application, as Clark suggested.

Thank you for your response Clark and Pegasus,

Sorry - my bad,,,,,,,,,, - FULL story -

I downloaded and installed a trial version (limits to encoding of 3 minutes
clip) of 'Any DVD Converter' (converts any video file to any video file ie.
..avi to mpg etc ready for burning to DVD) and liked the program to the
extent that I will buy the Pro version if I can have it work comprehensively
on my PC.
Everything works efficiently and 'Simply' - except the player, without which
the 'trimming system' cannot be used (because the player will not run - it
loops continuously the first second or so of the video clip - I am unable to
find what I want as the 'start point and end point' of the clip)
The input .avi files and the encoded output files (full encodings because I
can't trim where I want) will play OK in other players I have installed.
I contacted the publisher who replied very quickly and offered solutions
(changing video drivers within 'options') - that made no difference. Another
solution they suggested was to download 'external codecs' from
'anvsoft.com', and from advice locally downloaded the K-Lite codec pack from
there.
It was during installation of K-Lite Codec pack that these 'missing required
registry keys' were identified. I managed to install K-Lite codecs however
and use of the K-Lite Codec Tweak Tool shows these 'missing registry keys' -
Which I truly believe to have been missing for quite some time (careless
Registry Cleaning in the past - GULP)
so a System Restore would not solve this issue - I believe !!

I have taken the downloaded 'Any DVD Converter' and installed it on my
daughter's PC and it works just fine

So,,,,,,,,,, what I should have asked was - - - - Is there anywhere I can
download the registry keys that I can identify as missing, and import them
back into their correct place in my registry having carelessly deleted them
in the past?

I've re read this several times now and I hope it makes sense to you.

No way to download but since your daughter's PC has these keys here is what
you can try.
1) Start buy creating a new Restore Point on your PC and also on your
daughter's PC.
(these restore point will be your safety net in case something goes wrong)
2) On your daughter's PC, use regedit to locate each key (one key at a time)
that you need and export that key and any/all sub keys contained within that
key to a .reg file (do this by highlighting the key, right click and select
'Export')
(use a meaningful file name for each registry key you 'Export')
3) Copy each of these .reg files to your PC then double click on each of the
..reg files.

The keys should now be in your PC's registry!

That is why it is always recommended NOT to use any Reg Cleaning Tools. Besides it does not improve or create more space as these snake oil remedies (Reg Cleaners) claim

Or consider using System Restore to roll back to a restore point that
predates all of this.

If K-Lite says "DirectShow filter was detected as broken" then deleting
them is OK, K-Lite repairs everything. If you really want, for some
reason, to get some registry keys, I can find them for you (everything
is online somewhere) but I need to know what program's keys you are
missing.

JS,
Now why didn't I think about that one ("can't see wood for trees" comes to
mind)
personal thanks for helping
dfrog

Peter Foldes,
Thank you, I've been aware of 'snake oil' status for some time now, but, my
sin was committed before I got smart enough.
Thanks for your reply

Thanks to you also, but, I won't have restore dates recent enough to help
me.
Thanks for your reply
dfrog

ju.c,
I had found reference on Google to someone who reported successfully
removing these items from the registry when K-Lite had recommended it, but I
was a little wary of doing it (from experience now, having removed 'stuff'
out of registry whilst being unsure is not a smart move for me).
Your idea of being able to find these registry keys on the Internet was the
kind of thing I was asking for, and your offer to help find them for me
strengthens my respect for you and others who help.
Rather than put you to the trouble right now, I'm going to try JS's solution
(I would always want to put the effort in myself - helps my learning curve)
Personal thanks to you for your help

ju.c,
Had another look at your help and re-read
http://www.codecguide.com/about_kl.htm.

Can you confirm for me that if I let K-Lite remove broken DirectShow filters
(because of missing registry keys) then K-Lite will replace them with 'good'
DirectShow filters? And in your opinion, will this potentially solve my
problem?

I want to be sure that I understand correctly.
Thank you

Yes, the best part about K-Lite is it's ability to configure our
computers with DirectShow filters.
Before it sets them up it checks existing data and removes the bad stuff
then correctly configures everything properly.
If letting K-Lite do its thing doesn't work, try uninstalling 'Any DVD
Converter' then running the K-Lite Codec Tweak Tool agian then
installing 'Any DVD Converter'. Don't give up yet!

dfrog

ju.c,

I appreciate your help:-

I have done the following:-
1 Let K-Lite do it's thing and tried 'Any DVD Converter' - no change
2 Uninstalled 'Any DVD Converter' ( I use 'revo uninstaller') and
re-installed - no change
3 Uninstalled 'Any DVD Conv' and uninstalled K-Lite Codec Pk.
4 Re-installed K-Lite (which installed smoothly - no errors or 'missing
anything')
5 Re-installed 'Any DVD Conv'
6 Input a .avi file into 'Any DVD Conv' (the player still looped the
first second or so - no change)
7 Continued nevertheless to encode (having established a start and end
trim point - this time, as I dragged the 'handle' along the bar, the clip
did show, but would not run)
8 The resulting .mpg clip would still loop in the program player and not
run.
9 Both the input .avi and the trimmed output .mpg clips played just fine
when I close down Any DVD Converter, and play by default in Media Player
Classic.

So,,,,,,,,,,, I can achieve an end result, but its not right, and as you
suggest, I don't want to give up and be beaten.

At the same time, I don't want to become a burden

dfrog

PS Because I didn't understand what to do, when K-Lite setup finished and
I was given an option to configure ffdshow video decoder, & ffdshow audio
decoder, DirectVobSub and AC3FFilter - - I didn't, and presumed that these
would remain installed at default settings.

Thanks ju.c,
That looks good.
Support at 'Any DVD Converter' seem to be stumped and can't help any more,
so it looks as though I'm out of that one.

There are a couple of things you could do:
- Start your own thread instead of piggy-backing on someone else's thread.
- Do something about your CapsLock key. It's stuck.

Isn't undeleting the same as reinstalling?
