Registry entries

I am getting ready to install Vista Home Premium with an SP1 disc included.
I have XP Pro now. I know I would have to reformat since it won't do the
over install with the versions I'm working with. I'm fine with that.

I have a dual HD laptop. I will take out my C drive with XP and put another
identical one in to install Vista on. I have reformatted many times. There
are certain registry entries I keep to help get my programs back the way I
like them. Will XP's registry entries work with Vista? Sure makes it easier
to get things tweaked and back the way I like

Your assuming that all your applications keep their settings in the
registry, this is not so, many use their own config file located in their
installation directory. Not knowing all the apps you use, there is no way
anyone could recommend which keys to back up anyway. If you already have
some backed up, they may or may not produce the desired results in Vista if
they were exported from an XP registry, have a good backup if you decide to
try.

The ones I keep do keep settings in the registry. I have used them with
success before. As I said I have reformatted many times and along the way
learned a trick or two that works for me. I was just wondering if the
registry works essentially the same in both OS's. I will have the complete
XP drive as a backup in case there is something I didn't think of that I
might need after the clean install. I was only thinking of that XP drive for
any config files, etc that I didn't think of. I have never tried to use reg
entries from a different OS. On the old XP drive will I be able to find the
registry? Do I just use regedit with the drive indicated. It will be a USB
drive at that point

AFAIK Regedit will only allow editing of the registry of the active OS, you
cannot specify another, there are 3rd party tools available to do that I
believe. Worst case if you import a registry setting and it mucks up Vista
you can system restore back to the previous version.
