Registry Editor Problem

S

Scorpio

I am experiencing a new problem as of today. When I type
"Regedit" in the Start/Run window, I can see the Registry
Editor window for a fleeting second and it then disappears.
Can someone suggest a cure. Thanks in advance.

S

Thanks. It does help. But is there a way of permanently
getting rid of the virus and restoring the original files so
that I do not have to resort to using the additional file
for accessing the Registry Editor. Also, where do you store
the new files? Currently I have them in C:\WINDOWS\TEMP but
I would prefer a more suitable location which is easy to
remember.

My anti-virus software is the free version of AVG (v6.0) and
I am aware it is not the best of deterrants. I have run AVG
6.0 as well as Trend Microsoft's Online Antivirus program
and neither picked up any virus in my C:\Windows folder.
Thanks for pointing out that the three new utilities are
stored in C:\EmergencyUtils. I am still wondering how I can
restore the status quo for the original three .exe files
when my virus detectors do not report any virus in their
parent folders.

Is AVG up to date??
Program Version : 6.0.676 Release Date : 9/2/2003
Virus Database : 438 Release Date : 5/3/2004

Right click the AVG icon next to the clock | Click:
Run AVG Anti-Virus | Click: Run Complete Test.

Mine takes 21 minutes to run.
============

I'm not sure if System File Checker will fix 'em.
It's worth a shot. ;-)

Start | Run | Type: sfc /scannow | OK
Have your XP CD ready to stick in your CD drive

scannow sfc (sfc.exe)

==============

If not.........
The three files are on the XP CD.
D:\I386
TASKMAN.EX_
REGEDIT.EXE
MSCONFIG.EX_

Two would have to be expanded.
Or you could copy the files from C:\EmergencyUtils and rename them and move
them into the proper folders.

My AVG is up-to-date and agrees with yours.
I have once again run the Complete Test (11 mins in my case)
and still no virus was detected.
I ran System File Checker as explained by you but it did not
make any difference.
I copied the three files from Emergency Utilities, renamed
them to the original names and pasted them into the original
locations respectively, as suggested by you. Still there was
no improvement.
In both the above instances, I am unable to run "regedit"
and "msconfig" through Start/Run command. The Regedit screen
pops up but disappears immediately; and the msconfig does
nothing. However, when I click on the new files in Emergency
Utilities, they all work fine.
It looks as if there is a bug in the system which affects
these files in their original names and locations but has no
effect on the renamed files in Emergency Utilities. And AVG
is unable to spot the bug.
I did not try out the third suggestion of copying the files
from the XP disk because I did not quite understand how to
"expand" two of the files, but I am willing to try if you
could give me a "beginner's instruction" on how to go about
it. I have a feeling that even if I did copy the files from
the XP CD correctly, they too will get affected the moment I
install them.
My immediate problem of opening the Registry Editor has now
been solved thanks to your advice. I was only hoping to tidy
up my PC's Operating System by getting the concerned files
into their original locations.
Regards.

You must still have something. I don't know what.
You're right, [[..they too will get affected the moment I

I just did this.
Scroll down to Step 3 and click the Check my PC for Infection button.
You'll get a popup asking if you can trust MS, wants to install an ActiveX
