Registry editing help please

Clayton Jones

I am getting an error,1606 could not access network location
%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Pictures\. When I try to install any
application

I have searched Google and get one hit that I can't figure out what I must
do.

In the Registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders the Type is REG_SZ but it is supposed to be REG_EXPAND_SZ. How
do I change the Type to what it should be?

TIA

While the fix you report sounds plausible, and I don't see any reason
it shouldn't work, there's always risk with the Registry. So please
understand dthat I am answering the question you asked, and not
passing judgment on the wisdom of performing the operation.

That said, I don't believe you can change the type of a value. You
can, however, delete it and then re-create it with the proper type.
Delete should be obvious. To create, right-click in the right-hand
pane, select New, select Expandable String Value.

Thank you Stan.

I was successful in deleting and recreating the key and the errors I
experienced have gone.

Excellent! Thanks for letting us know, and I'm glad it went well for
you.

Congrats also on doing your research to find the proper key!
