While trying to follow some instructions for editing the registry in another
post in the newsgroup, I accidentally clicked on two wrong keys. They are
now both displayed in the right pane. I don't want to change any values or
delete them, but I'd rather they just went back to wherever they came from
and stopped appearing in the right pane. Is there a way to do that?

I did back up the registry (system state) before attempting this edit, so I
could do a system restore, but I'd like to do it directly if possible.

Hi Bobbi,

Please explain *exactly* what you did (I clicked on this...or I
right-clicked this and selected this...), and we'll do our best to walk you
through this.

Please bear in mind that Newbies' warning has some validity, but Kelly's
site has been "verified", has been recommended hundreds of times, and is
100% safe. On the other hand, Newbies instructions on editing the Registry
*could * have been just as dangerous--there was just a huge audience also
reading his fix, and if it were wrong he would have been called on it.
Newbie has excellent advice, and one can tell he/she has a pretty good idea
what they're talking about, and has been "around the block".

That being said, let us know exactly what you did.....

Hi, Curt-

First, I accidentally clicked on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SECURITY, and the
following appeared in the right pane: (Default) REG_SZ (value not
set)
I closed regedit and reopened it, but the key was still there in the right
pane.

I wasn't able to find the key Newbie specified and didn't know how to create
it. I decided to try to open another, random key (to see if the original key
would go away. It didn't, and the second key appeared in the right pane in
addition to the first. The second key was
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Non-Driver Signing:
and in the right pane is now Policy REG_BINARY 00
in addition to the first key.

What would you suggest now?

(After I gave up on the registry edit I used Kelly's solution, and it
worked.)

Ho Bobbi,

Now I understand. What you did was no different than opening Windows
Explorer, and beginning to explore what's on your computer. It is shown as
a tree, with the current open folder shown in the right pane. All you did
was expand the tree. If you want to collapse the tree back down, just go
back to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ and click on the little minus sign.

You can also just leave things as they are, and close regedit.

How the previous post ended up looking the way it did is beyond me.

Bottom line Bobbi; don't worry about it. You didn't do anything wrong.

Curt-

By gosh, that was simple! I wasn't worried about having done something
wrong, I just didn't like having keys in the right pane for future edits.

Thanks!
Bobbi
