Registry Corruption

I am a Windows XP Professional user.

I was using Access and was off-line when the mouse pointer froze and the
machine hung. I switched it off and on again a couple of times and the mouse
would still not work. I tried with a different mouse and after start-up,
Ad-Aware came up with about 20 attempts to change the registry. They did not
appear to be anything to do with the different mouse so I blocked them. When
the sequence had finished, all the desk top icons apart from Outlook, Unused
Desktop icons, Internet Explorer, Share to Web Upload folder and Recycle bin
had been replaced with the default Windows icon and .lnk had been added to
the end of the name. Trying to run any of the other applications caused the
following error message:

Windows cannot open this file.

‘Application Name’

To open this file Windows needs to know what created it. Etc…..

All the programs on the Start menu except Outlook are similarly affected
with the exception of the ‘blue’ ones as shown here:

However, if I go into Control Panel and double click on the icons very few
respond. Administrative tools opens but the icons are also Windows default
with .lnk added to the name.

If I try to run any application through Start Run with a .exe, .com, .reg
suffix I get the same message as above as I do if I double click any of these
types of file in ‘My Computer’. I cannot therefore change the registry. I
can, however, run .vbs files.

I have rebooted in Safe Mode but the results are the same.

I have tried to repair XP but during the process none of the following would
run (same message as above):

• Rundll32.exe
• Regsvr32.exe
• Mshta.exe
• Fixmapi.exe
• Odbcconf.exe
• Jdbgmgr.exe
• Mstinit.exe
• Logagent.exe
• Unregmp2.exe
• Cmd.exe
• Mwplayer.exe
• Grpconv.exe.

When I had finished, nothing had changed except when starting up I get the
message:

The procedure entry point GetIUMS could not be located in the DLL MSDART.DLL.

Also when dialling out I get the message:

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

I have scanned the disk with remote Norton and it says it is virus free and
the disk system does seem to be OK. The registry, however, is another story!!

The file types with the standard Windows icon now include .dat, .pif, .exe,
..reg, .com, .fpr, .bak, .thm, .isu, .old, .tmp, .lng, .mif, .sys and .prx.
There may be others but some of these may have had that icon anyway.

What version of Adaware? Did you start Adaware as your message implies
Adaware started of it's volition?

Hope this helps.

Nicky,
Did you try a System Restore.
That should at least get you back to a working state.
