I've heard of optimizing the registry, but not defragging it. It is a
file, so defrag should place it into contiguous space on the drive.

I use RegSeeker to clean the registry. It is pretty aggressive, but I
have never had a problem with it. I read of someone with Norton stuff
installed who had bad problems with this cleaner though. I have used
it with 98SE, ME, and now with XP Pro.

I just ran it and cleaned 292 useless entries with no problem.

Mmm, not properly...

When you remove a registry entry (for example with RegSeeker), actually that
entry remains in place (it's only marked as blank) and there is a gap into
the registry. Therefore the registry becomes more fragmented over time.

The same happens with the databases: if you delete a record, you only remove
its field entries and the access for that record. You need to compact the DB
to remove the holes and to re-index it.

I use regseeker too, although I've got to watch it pretty
closely. For some reason my perl file association goes away

It doesn't change a thing on my system (Win2K). before and after hive
sizes are identical. It also doesn't have an uninstaller and doesn't
appear in Add/Remove Programs. Had to manually remove entries from
Program Files, Start Menu, and desktop icon. Clicking on the link to
the author's web page yielded a blank page (not found or unreachable,
I forget).

I'd avoid it, given that experience.

Perhaps this is not quite what you ask, but:

Sysinternals freeware PageDefrag can defragment the registry files, and also
the pagefile

Well, I've had no trouble compacting the registry - it's OE that's crashed
and burned horribly on compacting; It's done it twice, and even I can take
that sort of hint.

I couldn't get on with any other mail clients, which is why I went back to
it - but Thunderscape's here now. Loud cheers
