Registry Care

Various software products are marketed for removing or
repairing stray entries or other errors in the registry.
Their developers claim that these bad entries can reduce
performance or even crash your computer. I haven't seen
anything definitive to either refute or support these
claims. What's the real scoop on cleaning the registry?

IMHO. Unless you have a specific problem, stay out of the registry. Most of
the "Registry fixers" will cause more problems than they will ever fix.

I got ERUNT for registry backup - it does the whole
registry rather than separate hives - but the current
version also includes what the developer
calls 'optimization'. This optimization is simply
compacting the registry hives to the minimum size
possible - no changes are made to the entries themselves.

I have used it about 4 times since last October without
problems. ERUNT is listed as a favorite utility at:
http://aumha.org/freeware.htm

Suggest you go to:
http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt/
and read what the developer says in his detailed
explanations. You can also download it from that site.

I would avoid programs that changed the registry - as JAX
noted, the bad outweighs the good if the changes are
wrong.
