Hi all,

I was told not to backup the registry (WinXP Home SP2) using XP's export
registry function nor other tools, but use another system. I would use my
bootable WinXP emergency CD to copy to a USB stick. Is this correct? If so,
which is the registry and where can I find it? Will I be able to copy this
file back to my harddrive, restoring the registry to its previous glory?

Thanks,

siggi

it seem that if that "other" person

then that "other" person would
be smart enough to tell you
how to do something else correctly.

In its default setting, the Recovery Console, which is what you'd use from
your XP CD for this purpose, has a limited set of folders it can see. It
won't include a USB stick.

If you use something like a Linux-based bootable CD with NTFS support, yes,
you could likely do this.

However, it's questionable whether you'd want to, since following a
reinstall you have no guarantee that all the files referred to in the
registry will be in place, and if file versions have changed, settings may
not only not apply but cause subtle system destablilization.

The registry is composed of several files, and before you go playing with
them you should learn as much as you can about them and how Windows uses
them. There is *lots* of information on this, and it's a really good idea
to learn before playing in it as the results can be undesirable, to put it
mildly.

You can use NTBackup, assuming your system came with it (some OEM's don't)
to back up the System State, which includes all registry-related files.
You can just do a raw copy of the core registry files, but that sometimes
isn't enough. Those raw files are identified here:

Use ERUNT to backup your registry. You can use ERUNT while you are using
Windows so there is no need to boot off a CD to back up your registry files.

ERUNT

Make sure you read the "README.txt" located in "c:\program files\ERUNT"
folder so you know how to recover your registry in multiple circumstances.

....took your advice, did a backup with ERUNT and then cleaned the registry
to
smithereens ;-) with RegSeeker. Now my PC is faster than ever.

Happy siggi :-)

A belated "Thank you" for this link, db!
