Register WinXPsp2

We received a new desktop computer (with WinXPsp2) today and when we began
installing it and then turning it on, we got a message which said something
about registering with Microsoft to receive future updates, (or something
like that). We did not click that because we were not connected to the
internet.
Now we wonder if that 'registering' was something that we HAD TO DO in order
to continue using WinXPsp2? Or whether it does not matter if we did or did
not
do it.
(Do we have to go someplace to register now or whether it is not necessary?)
Would someone know the answer to our question?

The only thing you need to do is Activate.
Your machine may be pre-activated.
However, if you see repeated messages counting down the days and referring
to Activation, be sure to Activate before your computer is shut down.

Registering is optional and there are no consequences of not registering.

On the other hand, activation is mandatory.
If you bought a computer from a major OEM such as Gateway, Dell, HP, Compaq
etc, it was activated from the factory.

The desktop is from Gateway. We believe it just said something about
registering with Gateway and MS (for future announcements, etc.) We have not
seen anything referring to activation, etc.

The only thing you should do at this point is make sure you are signed up
for updates.
Right-click on your Start Button, and click Properties.
Choose the Automatic Updates tab.
Select the Download option.
Apply and OK
(Automatic Updates can cause problems with your drivers. Best to review
Updates before you install.)

Gateway computers are activated from the factory so there is no need to
activate.
Since registration is not required, you are finished.

Thank you. We are a bit confused by your answer. You say to be sure "you are
signed up for updates." And then you say "Automatic Updates can cause
problems with your drivers. Best to review Updates before you install."
Also, we do not see "automatic updates" in Properties.

My apologies for confusing semantics.
The tab is called "Automatic Updates," but on the tab are several options,
including, but not limited to, Automatic Updates.
The reason I suggest reviewing downloaded updates before installation is
that some Tuesday, an update might come along, install itself, and make your
computer temporarily unusable. However, if you feel uncomfortable at this
point reviewing Updates, it is better to have the Automatic than no Updates
at all, especially with DSL.

Right click My Computer and click Properties.
That is what he meant.
