When I open regedit (and yes, im knowledgeable enough to
be in there) it opens then only stays the screen for
about 3 seconds, then closes. Any thoughts?

One, virus!

[[When you open System Configuration Utility [MSCONFIG], Registry Editor or
Task Manager, they flash for a second and quit. This symptom is caused by
Viruses.]]

Hi mark,

That problem is usually caused by a virus/trojan infection, most notably
W32.Spybot.Worm:

http://tinyurl.com/fcvw (Symantec info for W32.Spybot.Worm)

http://tinyurl.com/gd5j (TrendMicro info for WORM_SPYBOT.GEN)

You could d/load Doug Knox's xp_emegencyutil.exe, which "Creates usable
copies of REGEDIT, MSCONFIG and Task Manager", from here:
