Guest

I recently bought a program for my computer. i know it is compatible but
whenever i tried to install it a window says

"regedit is not a valid Win32 Application."

then another says

"Could not execute the external program regedit."

i contacted the support group for program i bought. but they said it was
something in microsoft. i really need help in fixing this because it prevents
me from installing any program that i buy.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements? When did
last run full scans?

Do you have a firewall?

What Error Reports appear in Event Viewer?

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for the time of the error and post copies. You can always
cause an error to occur and note the time and then inspect the logs.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Search for regedit.* on your hard-drive. If you have any regedit.bat or
regedit.com, remove them. You should only have a regedit.exe
(c:\windows\system32\regedit.exe).

If you have any of the others, you got hit with malware ... I would then run
a malware/virusscan on your system.

Others that usually get hit at the same time as regedit are:

ping
telnet
netstat
taskkill
tasklist
tracert

malware usually installs .com versions of these. There should only be .exe
versions.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm
