version not later than 2002 and using updated virus definitions).

Thanks, Malke. That did the trick! I had the Swen.A virus. I had to use a repair tool, though, to repair what the anti-virus program removed in the way of running executables. I was unable to make executables work at first. Once the tool was run, however, a lot of things started working that didn't work before! I appreciate your help.

Glad it worked for you. Now finish up your machine cleaning by removing
any spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from www.security.kolla.de and
Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs
before running them. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal
tools in Safe Mode.
