have caps on as a habit and never even heard of the term "shouting" nor knew

That said, my problem stil remains as previously stated and would appreciate

Hi Thnkit,

What happens when you try to run Regedit.exe? See if this article applies:

Error "Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator" when you open the Registry Editor in Windows Vista:

Hi Ramesh,

I tried your second approach entered regedit at start-search and it opened
to 5 regedit displays:

1. regedit.exe.mui
2. regedit32
3. reg_enable
4. regedit.32
5. regedit.exe.mui

#3 to me to an error message - Invalid root in registry key code 8007002

#'s 1,2,4,5 took me to windows file aqssociation screen - unknown.

A different nformationpath took me to the information below that still left
me with the regedit editor access problem so i can fix my cd rom original
problem.

Any further ideas

Thanks

Hi,

Try mentioning the full path:

%windir%\regedit.exe

Press {ENTER}

If the file is still missing, then you may try running SFC. Use these steps:

Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Thanks once again and did what you suggested. The following was the result

Did sfc/scannow
Verified 99% - unable to fix several of them with details in
CBS.log windir\logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:Windows\Logs\cbs\cbs.log.
How do I access the log vile and how do I fix?

Tried to find the CD drive on the computer and it wasn't there. I then
tried regedit at the "Start" then Search and it resulted in the same "1-5"
below. I know I'm missing something but don't know what it is. Ultimately,
I want to access my cd/dvd drive and the regedit approach of deleting the
up-down filters worked the first time.

I know i'm a novice and hate to take up your time but I would appreciate if
you can provide some additional advice.

Thanks

Go to Windows\System32\

type

dir reg*.exe

you will get a slice of the directory and AMONG them you will find the file
you are misspelling so badly and disrespectfully:)

regedt32.exe

Note: regedt32.exe not ***regedit32.exe*** Letter "i" is missing.

There is little known joke about a proctologist who brought his students
into a section room where a corpse was spread on the table. He told his
students that they should learn to be not fastidious and attentive. After
that he put a finger in the cadaver's anus and then in his mouth. He asked
all students to follow his example. They did.

The guy said: You showed that you are not fastidious but you are not
attentive. I put a different finger in my mouth.

Try the Reg.exe console utility to remove the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values.

Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow. Type the following commands one by one, and then press ENTER:

Hi Thnkit,

Press {ENTER}

Thanks

Thnkit

Registry Editor: Welcome
System configuration information is stored centrally in a hierarchical
database called the registry. You can use Registry Editor to add and edit
registry keys and values, restore the registry from a backup or to default
values, and to import or export keys for reference or backup.

etc.

Guess what I thought was a sarcastic initial response was not. I always
have caps on as a habit and never even heard of the term "shouting" nor knew
that caps make it hard to read. My apologies to all for this unintentional
mistake and to Dave in particular - it won't happen again.

That said, my problem stil remains as previously stated and would appreciate
any help.

Appologetically.

Hi Thnkit,

The following .vbs fix from Doug Knox removes the UpperFilters, LowerFilters registry values.
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs

Download the file and save it to Desktop. Open an "admin" Command Prompt and run the .vbs file by typing the following at the console window:

wscript.exe "%userprofile%\desktop\xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs"

Ramesh:

I did enter at the admin command prompt. That said, I started everything
from ground zero as follows:
1. Retried the sfc /scannow approach by "Click Start, click All Programs,
click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as
administrator - then...typed the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc
/scannow. It scanned.Verified 99% - unable to fix several of them with
details in CBS.log windir\logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:Windows\Logs\cbs\cbs.log.
How do I access the log vile and how do I fix?
2. Retried the reg.exe console utility as you described in your 12/27/07
8.49pm post and still got the Yes/No ? Tried entering "Yes" on same line as
the Yes/No ? and also at the following command prompt. No reselt. Also, is
the {Watch for line wrap} information or is that something I should use as
the "third" entry if the Yes/No problem is resolved. Because of these facts,
this didn't solve the problem.
3. Reopened "All Programs=>Accessories=>Right Clicked the Comand Prompt and
retried # 2 above onece again and got the (Yes/No) - I still don't know how
or where you enter "Yes" and if the {Watch for line wrap} is 1) information
or is that 2) something I should use as the "third" entry if the Yes/No
problem is resolved.

I feel I must be very close but I need more direction as per the above.

Thanks again

Thnkit

Are you sure you opened an admin Command Prompt, and not the regular Command Prompt?

Ramish, i feel like I'm almost ther but.........

When I type in what you suggested, a (yes/no) choice comes up - i enter yes
just after the (yes/no) + press enter and I get an Error access denied.

How do i get past this?

Hi Thnkit,

Try the Reg.exe console utility to remove the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values.

Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow. Type the following commands one by one, and then press ENTER:

Reg delete "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}" /v UpperFilters

Reg delete "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}" /v LowerFilters

{Watch for line wrap}

Ramesh:

Thanks

Thnkit
