regedit.exe - Windows Task Manager

second, they worked fine before.

Searching the group for keywords, such as "task manager" will reveal
similar queries - and answers. Bruce Chambers often posts this...

This behavior, which also often applies to MSConfig.exe and
Regedit.exe, is typical behavior of more than one virus/worm, the
three below being the most common:

W32.Klez

First, run a full virus scan on the system. There are several virus that
exhibit this behavior. See these links for more details.

If a virus is not found, go to the following website and scroll down to Line
113, left column.
Click the Task Manager Repair link to download the file.

Scroll down to Line 173, left column and click the Repair
the registry editor to download this file.

Double click each file to run the fix.

In addition to Dev and Ron's advice:

For additional help see www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Create Emergency
Copies of Critical XP System Utilities. This small VB Program will create
backup, usable copies of Task Manger, Regedit and MSConfig (named
Taskmgr1.exe, Regedit.com and MSConfig1.exe) in a new folder
C:\EmergencyUtil. Many virus programs will intercept these programs, based
on their original file name. The modified file names, allow them to be run.
Open Windows Explorer to C:\EmergencyUtil and double click the application
you need. The next revision will allow you to browse for the folder you
want to place the backups in.
