Regedit - basic question

I am trying to resolve a printer problem and my printer software support has
advised me to do something with my Registry. I am petrified of the registry,
have never done anything with it, and really don't understand it very well.
It appears to me that the "keys" are represented with "folder" icons.

I was instructed to " Click on each Version key to find contents in the
right-window pane and delete all the sub-keys inside Version-2 and Version-3,
but not these keys themselves."

My question is this: Should the sub-keys be showing up as folder icons in
the right window pane?
or only like sub-folders under the Version folder (key), in the left pane.?

Hello,

they should just look like the other folder icons in the left. Keys are
normally on the left side.

Hope this helps.

I would delete every folder that concerns the " Printer" Software in
the left pane or registry tree. Also, remove the
Printer Software from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and the
Folder in Program Files. Make sure that the
Printer is disconnected and restart the computer. Reinstall the Printer
Software before you reconnect the Printer or
when the software asks for it.

Before you go poking around in the Registry you might want to
create a restore point in case you need to retrace your steps.
To create a restore point, do the following;

On your Start menu, navigate to Accessories -> System Tools and
click on System Restore.
In System Restore, select "Create a restore point" and hit the
Next button.
Enter a name for this restore point and hit the Create button.
Hit the Close button.

As for your question, are you referring to this registry key?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows
NT x86\Drivers\Version-3

The subkeys will be displayed in the left hand pane as folders
under Version-2 and Version-3. You can right click on these
subkeys and select Delete from the menu to remove them from the
registry. Do not delete Version-2 or Version-3.

Note: Just to be on the safe side, you might want to right
click on the Version-2 and Version-3 keys and select Export
from the menu. Save each key to a handy location such as your
desktop in case you have to restore these registry keys.

Good luck

Yes!

Yes! I think of restore point as my best friend.

Thank you Nepatsfan: You actually answered the question I asked! The way
the instructions were worded, I wasn't sure whether the "Sub-Key" I was
supposed to delete was in the right or the left pane.
