Jose,
I think the OP has got it all straightened out now, he's just
criticizing
some advice he had been given.

Richard,
Crikey, you know, I think that's what he's gone and done!
He's [Roy] copied the actual programs themselves over to the start menu,
I didn't think for a minute
It should take about 5 minutes to fix one missing shortcut and less
than that for the others because you will then know how.
When you go to Start, Programs, Accessories, what do you not see that
you want to see?
If I missed the answer, please post the name of the shortcut you think
is missing.- Hide quoted text -

Sorry Tim if I had put it that way, it was that the circuituous route
that was elaborated and which I followed did led to no changes in the
accessories shortcuts.
Because the moment I created it I am at a loss where to save it as I
can't find the option either to save and where.....

The apostrophes between the phrases also added to the confusion as the
moment I run I it I am always notified by endless error no matter how
carefully I cut and paste it...
Although following your steps just led to the appearance of the lost
icons but thats about it......
So as I wanted to find the solution of the problem fast as its getting
really irritating when a kid kept pestering you about his PC
problems..and I am not doing anything concrete to resolve it...

That was the time when a sudden flash of inspiration came that if I
copied those from the system 32 folder, into the incomplete
accessories folder, it might led to a permanet solution......
And I was indeed right.....that I consider a valuable piece of
information that I never realized only after the issue dragged for
weeks.....

The only thing that I can't understand as what other have stated
also ,is why does those accessories short cuts just suddenly
disappeared when the Cyberlink powerDVD( or other programs) was
installed in that PC.
And another thing that I can't find an answer is why it will not just
create a place in the spacious all program directory instead of
displacing those shortcuts.....?
I wanted some sensible explanation why some PCs ,Start> all program
directory just don't allow it and others can.........?

Well, I hope so (the - he has it straightened out part).

It is obnoxious for (what I think is) a simple problem to drag on for
2 weeks.  Sometimes, it is because the statement of the problem is
vague and then you end up having to tease the details out as you go
along, or a simple question is asked and does not get answered.

Hmm, yes it might partly due to my fault. but what is supposedly a
clear cut solution seems not to be working in that particular
case.....
Just confounds me too.........in the same manner why in the first
place those short cuts just disappear from the accessories folder
suddenly.....

Never did thought a PC so unique as that of nephew's....whew.
Sorry for that inconvenience....
Cheers!

First, Roy, since you are using Google Groups to read these newsgroup
messages, make sure you click on any "Show quoted text" links in the web
page message so you don't overlook anything. Your previous reply to me did
not include any of the quoted text from my message. (I don't know why Google
is so sneaky. :)

I keep that in mind Richie....thanks !

Roy,
There is, for me at any rate, still a massive part of this that is
still unclear.

You keep saying you 'copied' things (I'll call the things you think you
"copied" 'things' for now) from the system32 directory to the 'Accessories'
folder. If you had, most of us would think that you would end up with the
..exe files in the 'Accessories' folder!!

However, since you [say] that you have checked this and found that the
contents of your 'Accessories' folder really ARE, in fact [genuine]
shortcuts, may a question that what you did was actually 'copying' !!

What I think you did was this :

You DRAGGED the files across with the mouse, from one open window to the
'Start Menu'.

Windows XP realizes you don't want to copy the actual files so creates
shortcuts instead. You should notice when you were 'dragging' the files
over, that there was a tiny shortcut 'arrow' (called an overlay) that
appeared on the icon AS you were dragging it across. This denotes that you
are going to create a shortcut in the place where you let the file go.

If you see a + [plus] sign AS you are dragging a file from one place to
another, you will create a COPY of that file when you let it go.

If you see neither a 'arrow' NOR a + [plus] sign, then the file WILL be
MOVED.

Depending on what file you are trying to drag to what location, Windows
decides which it will be (shortcut, copy or move).

You can influence this be pressing the 'Shift' key (to copy) and the 'Alt'
key (for shortcut), but Windows still has the last word over what is allowed
in what situation.

they offer some harm if it produced the desired effect ?
