Reg files no longer working

For some reason I can no longer use .reg files to put entries into the registry.

I think the file association is wrong.

How can I fix that ?

What happens when you "open with" ?
I have my default set to Edit and not Run.
Default of Run is dangerous.
 
Is there if you hold down the Shift key?

There is if I hold the shift key.

I used to be able to double click on it and it would prompt if I wanted to add it to the registry.

If that's what you want - I wouldn't - you may be able to set it in Folder
Options - File Types - Advanced for that file type.

I think I looked into it and couldn't figure out the action to be performed.

I don't know why the .reg association got changed/corrupted, but I have been
"running" reg files for about 5 years without problems.

Click "Start", "Run", type "cmd /c assoc .reg=regfile" into the "Open"
box and
click "OK". Please note the period before "reg".
