Reg Cleaners & XP-home

Someone mentioned here NOT to use a RegCleaner on W-XP. We run it once or
twice a month on W98 and it always "catches" some errors (and creates a
backup-just in case). How is XP's registry handled? Must it be done
manually? Is there software to do it like for W-98? Does it collect
"junk" like W98's registry?

There is nothing in the helpfiles (F1) or the Dummies book covering this.

It is not really necessary to use a registry cleaner with Windows XP.
However, System Mechanic (www.iolo.com) includes an excellent
registry cleaner/optimizer program that works well with Windows
XP. It includes an "undo" backup feature, handy if the registry
cleaning process should corrupt your system.

Greetings --

Having seen the results of inexperienced people using automated
registry "cleaners," I can only advise to you to avoid them all.

The only thing needed to safely clean your registry is knowledge
and Regedit.exe. If you lack the knowledge and experience to maintain
your registry by yourself, you also lack the knowledge and experience
to safely configure and use any automated registry cleaner, no matter
how safe they claim to be.

I always use Regedit.exe. I trust my own experience and judgment
far more than I would any automated registry cleaner.

Thanks guys. Perhaps I can find a legitimate website where I can "learn"
more about the registry. I have removed some "trash" leftovers from
Norton (on W98) so it would reinstall/work correctly.
