reformatting harddrive

I bought this Sony Vaio last year. It has a 13 gig harddrive which now says
is full. I have already deleted programs I know I don't need/use, but the
disc still seems extraordinarily full (940 MB free space left). What else do
I need to do? Of the programs that are left on the C drive, I can't
determine what to delete, if anything.

No discs came with this computer. My old computer came with a disc that let
me reformat the harddrive to the same specs as when I took it out of the box
(so to speak). It would erase everything and replace only what came
installed on the computer to begin with. I used it about once a year and
only reloaded the programs I wanted.

With this Vaio I can't do that. There are no instructions/suggestions
through the "help" options that I can find associated with this computer.
Where can I find some help with this issue?

Thanks,
GMendoza

What is the model #? Desktop?

Hi ... Try to defrag >>> start >>> All Programs >>> Accessories >>> System
Tools >>> Disk Defragmenter

See if that help any

Go to Control Panel, Internet Options and remove temporary
internet files and cookies. Also look in C:\Documents and
Settings\your username\local settings\temp and remove
files that end with .tmp You will not be able to remove
all of them but get rid of the ones that you can. You can
also probably remove .exe, .dll, .jpg, .gif files from
this location (only) if there are any. Leave the .log
files and the .txt files.

If you have music files on this computer move them to CD,
I assume you have a CD burner on this system. Also
move .avi and .mov files to CD.

Good Luck !

I would suggest talking to Sony tech support. They should be able to send
you an image of the base install for you laptop. All the recommendations
you see from the other posts are all a good way to give you more time.
Don't forget to empty your recycle bin.

Dumbest idea I've ever heard.

It can't possibly help. Defragging simply rearranges what's on
the disk, for the purpose of putting pieces of files closer to
each other and thus improving performance. It doesn't change the
amount free at all.

Lee: The model is PCV-RZ22G - yes, desktop.
Everyone else: Thanks for all the suggestions. I will run the defrag etc
and clean the temp files (I think those are the only ones I didn't
delete)...I will also try to contact Sony support again.

Thanks again for all the suggestions and help.

It looks like the necessary peripheral drivers and updates are here
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-list.pl?template=EN&mdl=PCVRZ22G in case
you want to get a retail version of XP and install Windows clean. I don't
know if the hardware is adequate on that machine, my internet is a little
slugglish right now...

Contacting Sony to get an original CD is a good idea..
