I have an old document that I want to reformat according to a new template.
Is it possible to do this automatically, to tell the document which
template is the one it should be based on?

In Word 2002 or above, you can click on Tools | Templates
and Add-ins, and attach a new document template (it will
automatically update your styles to that new template's).
I suggest you then immediately return to this dialogue
box and uncheck the auto-update feature.

I'm not sure of this feature in earlier versions of Word.

It's the same in all versions of Word. Note, however, that this will *only*
affect styles. Document-level formatting (margins, page
size/orientation/columns, header/footer, etc.) is not changed. If you want
to apply this type of formatting as well, the best way is to create a new
blank document based on the desired template, press Enter a couple of times,
then use Insert | File to insert the old document.
