I just reformatted my moms computer and everything is almost set. Right now
I'm having trouble with the sound driver. It's very ghosty and echoey. It is
a SoundMax integrated device on a Compaq Presario 6000.

I went to hps site and searched for my sound device and then downloaded a
12mb exe.

After running it, I get this error at 100%

[Severe]
(X) Driver not Found! Reboot your system, and run this setup again.
[OK]

I've googled the error but I'm not finding any answers.

PS rebooting doesn't do anything

I am not sure which version of the Compaq Presario 6000 you have, but
here are the three that I found. You may want to download the latest
BIOS for your version, then install all of the latest drivers:

6000Z:

Thanks, I tried the site, but I must have downloaded the wrong one. Those
links did have the right driver. Thanks

Well those three are the only support sites for the three models of the
Compaq Presario 6000 Series. If the drivers aren't on that site, you
are stuck with whatever you have on CD. If you have problems running
the setup/drivers from the CD, you may try copying the CD to the hard
drive and running it from there.
