reformat hard drive

I want to donate my computer, and want to wipe it clean
before donation. How do I do this? I have tried format
c:.
 
Perhaps try booting the system with a windows 98 boot disk and then run your
format.
 
There is a fantastic utility called DBAN which will
completely wipe your drive and it is really easy to use -
boot from floppy or CD-Rom and type autonuke its that easy!

try searching for it on the web - it is a free download.
