How do I reformat c drive. I realize everything will be
lost...but I'm so frustrated I don't have any choice but
to start with a brand new clear computer.

Thanks

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.

---> Accessing Motherboard BIOS
---> http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

7. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.
After XP is installed, visit the support website of the manufacturer
of each hardware device to obtain the latest drivers or software
designed to work with Windows XP.

How about reformatting for Windows 98

My computer came factory loaded with XP and don't have
disk. But I do have Windows 98

Thanks Michelle

Yes, you can format and install Win98, and as you said, everything --
all your programs and all your data -- will no longer be available,
unless you have a backup.

Unless you just got your Win XP computer yesterday and have installed
nothing and produced no data, you probably are making a mistake to do
this. Chill out. Describe your problem, including the make and model
of your PC, whether or not you have an original XP CD (apparently not),
what you have tried to do and what has happened. Even if we can't help
you solve your problem, a compentent computer shop (not CompUSA or the
like) should be able to help you short of wiping your hard drive clean
and going back to Win98.

You do it as part of a reinstall of the system after booting the XP CD
direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install.
When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the
current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next
stage

If it's a brand name PC, it might have come with a Restore
CD, in which case it is normal not to have a Windows XP
CD. All you need to do to reinstall windows is to stick
the cd in the drive, and reboot...

Also, the extra files that would be on the WinXP cd might
be in your C:\WINDOWS\I386 folder... take a look..
