I have been running XP home for about a year, and enought quirky problems
keep cropping up, so I am planning to reformat my C: drive and reinstall XP.
This machine has XP installed as an upgrade over Windows 98. My questions:
should I go the same route when I reformat (98, then XP upgrade)? Should I
purchase a full copy of XP home, or is it worth the difference in cost to go
whole hog and purchase a full copy of XP pro? I plan to keep this computer
for at least the next 4 to 5 years, and want a good stable platform which
will give me minimal problems over the long haul.

Another alternative. Assuming you still have the Windows 98 disc, boot with
Windows XP and begin the install. At some point, it will tell you it can't
find an earlier version. Insert the Windows 98 disc, click Browse, and
point to your CD-ROM drive. XP will then verify that you have an earlier
version, and will continue the install. This way, you get a clean install,
without having to buy another copy of XP.

You can use the upgrade copy of XP Home to do a clean install. Just
show the installation program the 98 CD when it asks for it. You
probably do not need "Pro" unless you require the additional security
and networking capabilities.

Plan on keeping your computer for the next 5 years? Person after my
own heart!
