Refilled

I just refilled my IP4000. Now I don't need to worry about my wallet
whenever I print. It went smoothly. I used plastic screw and o-ring to seal
it. I had to thread the filling hole and there may be scraps got into the
cartridge while threading. Should I worry about it? Will the foam/filter
block the scraps from entering the head?

Is there a way to get rid of (not use) the dye black? It looks awful on
photo.

Thanks for your help!

ZR.

the scraps will probably be blocked by the filter. I prefer to use self
threading stainless steel pan head sheet metal screws with o-rings as the
screws cut their own threads as they are inserted the first time. Mamy
carts have a fill hole that the #6 screw fits just right. If I need to make
a fill hole I use a hot paper clip wire to melt a hole so there are no
plastic filings falling in from drilling a hole. drc023 does drill the hole
and tap it for the plastic screws and he doesn't have problems with the
filings that fall into the reservoir area.

The black you don't want in photos is the pigment based black in the bci-3
cart. It has a different sheen than the other inks. The pigment based ink
is only used when the paper is set to "plain paper." It is not used for any
of the photo paper settings.

Whose ink and cartridges are you using? Please report on color balance and
how the inks and carts function in your printer. This will help others
make a well informed choice in selecting these products.

Anyone has a brain can see it cost less than two sets of canon cartridge.

Don't know which cartridge it came from. I'm printing picture on photo
paper. The black lacks grey scale and it's pure black. There is no
transition area between color and black, like the originnal photo has.

I used HobbiColor in the OEM cartridge. There were still little canon ink
left when I refilled it. I printed about ten pictures (4 big ones). They
look perfect so far. But I'll hold the judgment till all the canon ink got
out.

I'd not have dreamed of printing big pictures using OEM ink.

Thanks!

You mention that you are printing on photo paper, but are you setting the
paper choice in the printer software to the type of photo paper you are
using? (i.e. Photo paper pro, Glossy photo paper, matte photo paper, etc.)
This printer uses the pigmented ink when you have the setting at plain
paper. Since that is the default selection you have to change it when
printing on any of the photo paper types.>

OEM carts work very well for refilling. Be sure to refill before you get
the low ink or empty message. The carts last for more refills and work
better longer if you don't let the sponge dry out. Hobbicolor inks have had
good reports on this NG and on the nifty stuff forum. Be very careful that
you use the dye based black ink to refill the bci-6 black cart and the
pigment based ink to fill the bci-3 (larger) cart.
I'd not have dreamed of printing big pictures using OEM ink.

Feels good to forget about ink cost and just print anything you want to! My
wife uses her ip5000 to print emails and website pages and we don't bother
to set her printer to gray scale as the ink is so cheap when refilling. I'm
not reluctant to make duplicates of any and all my pictures for friends and
relatives as we are just talking about pennies. Same goes for the Costco
Glossy photo paper, both 8.5x11 and 4x6.

I second that emotion. I use HobbiColors too and the luxury of printing
anything I want, regardless of size or quantity, is no longer a luxury
but an everyday experience when using good refill ink (not the
"universal" or "works in every printer type", but a cartridge specific
ink. It costs virtually nothing to print. I chuckle when I see posts
regarding "cost per page" comparisons. With refill ink, it costs
something like $1 per cartridge fill. At that price no one cares about
cost per page. It's basically useless to even calculate cost per
cartridge. Sadly, I have nothing to print at the moment . . . Burt,
you got anything? . . . Tony? . . . Zakezuke? . . . :)

I did the math at some point... there are costs involved.

1. Ink... $2ish to $2.50ish/ounce
2. Cartridges.. I only have experence with 3rd party. I don't know
the life of my own let alone canon OEM.
3. Misc supplies. Syrenges, fancy bottles, whatnot. paper towels,
tinfoil, whatever misc household items you use to refill.
4. The printer it self, which does have a limited life span which does
factor into the cost.

I don't think of it as being so cheap I can print anything I want. I
think of it as being so cheap I can afford to do full color 8x10 for
typicaly less than what it costs for a 4x6 at the local print a mart.
I do find it somewhat irksome those who quote the ink cost without
taking into account the cartridge cost. But even taking that into
account we are talking 80% to 90% savings for self fillers. So it ends
up being you can print 10 times as much without added cost.

I lack any solid info on how to disable the blacks... once and a while
I end up getting a photo with a matte blotch in it but that's pretty
rare. I'm also on the ip3000 most of the time.

Taliesyn,

Just finished printing about 500 4x6 photos from a trip to Italy and am, at
this moment, printing our holiday cards. Unfortunately, I will finish them
tonight and will then have to find something more to print. I'll probably
select the best of the pics from our trip and do some 8x10's to frame and
hang on the wall. After the family holiday pics to print this month I'll be
at a loss as to what to do with my printer and $1 US per refill ink carts.
The good news - I'll get to refill some carts.

Sure, why not...rain on my party, Zak! But I warn you, I have an
umbrella.

I use about 9 refills per year, last count. I'm not running a business.
I just like to create things that need printing (booklets, CDs and
liners, greeting cards, photos, et). 9 sets of Canon OEM cartridges
would have cost me over $1000 dollars (Canadian). I'd need a mortgage!

Okay, we'll do it your way. Subtract the items you list above and I
probably SPENT $800 less than I would have had I bought OEM ink
cartridges instead of refilling. So it costs me MUCH MUCH less when
compared to what it MIGHT HAVE COST ME. Maintenance free and totally
clog free. Hell, I don't even need the two "cleaning" and "deep
cleaning" routines that Canon recommends for their own cartridges. :)

500 photos! .... greeting cards!... some 8x10s!.. Burt, you really know
how to hurt a guy here with two fully loaded printers and nothing to
print! But it's my own fault, you know. I did all my Holiday and
Christmas project printing late November, early December. Now I'm at a
loss. I've already had to put my third printer in long-term storage, the
other two have been whining all morning - "please, give us something,
anything - a letter, an email... spam!". Maybe I'll just start them up,
just to give them that sense of being wanted and purpose...

And you JUST HAD to rub it in with the refilling you were dying to get
to!!!. . . Say, you mind if I come over later and help you refill?
Mine are still half full. Hey, I've got an idea! I've got some old
bottles of bulk ink I don't use anymore. I always wanted to do some
painting - albeit in 3 colors! . . .

Hey - if the printer can make every color from slightly off white to dead
black with three colors of ink I'm sure you can do it too. You've opened up
a whole new vista for the "aftermarket club!"

The regulars were right measekite, you are history for me. I usually
don't have a problem with trolls, but you are not just a troll, you are
a moron.

The guy is telling you that two sets of cartridges are more expensive
than a printhead (which isn't going to clog you moron, everyone can do
it but you) and you reply that he is using "AFTERMAR4KER INKIE".

You lack in argument, logic, common sense, spelling and even style.

Any response in your posts is a waste of time.
